Is Fortnite Still Number One?

Fortnite is the type of Battle Royale game that you either hate or love. Despite the memes and jokes about it though, Fortnite is still alive and kicking. But of course, all kings and queens must assert their dominance after a certain time. Much to Epic Games’ dismay, there’s a lot of competition in the market right now for Battle Royale games. While Fortnite may have all the cool skins in the Fortnite item shop that were made in collaboration with other titles and artists, the reality is that not all people prefer those kinds of things. Some like using specialized characters tailored to the game, while others prefer militaristic gameplay that really feels like you’re on a battlefield. And with the Battle Royale market being as saturated as it is, there are a lot of titles that are worthy to choose from. Take Call of Duty: Warzone, for example. It’s a Battle Royale game that’s currently making headlines because of its intense graphics, engaging gameplay, and militaristic style. Despite being a well-made game, it’s not for everyone. Since the graphics are quite demanding, you’ll need to have at least a mid-range PC to run it—and that’s stretching it! What’s more, there’s a lot to do in Warzone to the point where it can be almost overwhelming. Taking on contracts while trying to survive can be hard for people who don’t like juggling tasks. Altogether, there’s a bit of everything for everyone that likes playing Battle Royale games. Fortnite may still be here, but do they still take the number one spot?

The Best at What it Does

Unlike other Battle Royale games, Fortnite prides itself on trying to be as creative as possible when creating skins for the Fortnite item shop. Who can forget the likes of John “Jonesy” Jones, the mascot of Fortnite, the lovable Meowscules, who is anything but that in arm wrestling matches, and the pancake abomination Mancake? You can tell there’s a lot of love and effort that goes into making these skins for the game. It is, after all, how Epic Games ultimately makes money.

There’s also the fact that they collaborate with other well-known brands and franchises. Take the last season, for example. Chapter 2: Season 4 of Fortnite was all about the Marvel franchise. We saw the likes of Wolverine, Iron Man, and even met face-to-face with Galactus before the end of the season. And just recently, we saw the addition of Kratos, the main character in the God of War series. More and more unexpected characters from different games and franchises are popping up, but that kind of diversity is what Fortnite does in order to cement themselves as the best at what they do.

Chipping in Events

Epic Games likes to pull out all the stops when it comes to the events that they do for Fortnite. It’s almost unbelievable how they were able to work together with high profile artists such as Travis Scott and Marshmello. Travis Scott, specifically, is one of the biggest hits in Fortnite. Besides a great concert, it led to the birth of some trends from the artist himself such as the rise of the Travis Scott burger. The Fortnite fame is not one to take lightly. Look at how Travis Scott’s popularity shot up because of it. Sure, he was already famous, but the Astronomical event made him even more popular.

Epic Games also likes to drop teasers and trailers in prestigious awards events such as The Game Awards. It’s basically a tradition at this point how Epic always makes a big announcement about Fortnite in every Game Awards show.

Final Thoughts

So is Fortnite still the number one Battle Royale game? The answer is a big, fat no. They have all these cool events and Fortnite weapon skins on the Fortnite item shop, but there’s a reason why the game is heavily-memed for being a Battle Royale catered to kids. Famous streamers who have gotten their fame through Fortnite have moved on to games. The number of players that play Fortnite is stagnant. While we can clearly see the effort that Epic exerts into making memorable events and skins, the competition just overshadows what Fortnite has built over the years.

We’re not saying that Fortnite is bad though! In fact, it’s still a great game. But if we’re thinking about what the best Battle Royale game of all times is, Fortnite is not it.
