Four Mistakes L&D Pros Must Avoid When Creating A Custom Elearning Course

Helping your employees learn new skills is a great way of increasing business productivity and keeping employee turnover low. It helps employees learn better ways to do their jobs, thereby boosting their confidence and job satisfaction. One of the best ways to provide L&D opportunities is through a cloud-based Learning Management System like Absorb LMS.

It is the responsibility of the L&D pros to identify employee learning needs and organizational learning goals in order to find a training course that aligns with these needs & goals. If an off-the-shelf or ready-to-use online course fulfills all the objectives, then it becomes easy to provide employees a way to grow that is affordable for the company.

But sadly, such courses are not entirely successful in enhancing employee knowledge since they fill up learning gaps only to a certain extent. This is why L&D pros need to opt for custom eLearning course development to provide a tailored learning solution.

When creating a custom eLearning course, L&D pros often fall prey to some common mistakes that can reduce the effectiveness of the course. With this article, we will outline 4 such custom eLearning course development mistakes L&D pros generally tend to make so you can avoid them.

  • Not doing enough research:

Starting out without being aware of the organizational training objectives is a huge mistake L&D pros must avoid. It is crucial to research extensively about what your employees need to learn and what skills the organization deems important for them to learn.

An in-depth research gives you direction and ensures that the training content is well-curated for the employees. This will help you structure the training content more meticulously and provide employees impactful training material.

  • Not making the content relevant to the audience:

One of the worst mistakes you can make is not keeping the content relevant. The main reason custom eLearning courses are made is because one-size-fits-all does not apply when it comes to a company with diverse departments.

If the content is not relevant to the employees, they won’t connect with it and it won’t help them get the most out of it. Make sure the courses are personalized for every different department (for example: product development, manufacturing, sales, customer service, etc.) and not just personalized for the company.

  • Forcing too much content:

Just because the course is tailored for a certain audience doesn’t mean it can include everything. L&D pros need to ensure the custom eLearning courses deliver learning in an easy way without overwhelming the employees with too much information.

Pushing too much content through text, vidoes, images, animation can get too cluttered and make it difficult for employees to consume and retain information. Instead, divide it into small modules focused on one topic and ensure the concepts are explained in a simple way without elaborating too much.

  • Poor visual design:

When the design of a course starts distracting the employees rather than helping them focus, it is a sign of a classic visual design mistake. L&D pros must avoid mistakes like using distorted images, using too much text, using too many colors, mismatched fonts, etc.

Poor visual design in a custom course can make the course look very complex. Additionally, inconsistency in visual design can cause employees to have a difficult time understanding the flow and navigation of the course.

Conclusion:

Custom training courses exist to provide employees a more targeted learning path that helps them learn relevant skills without wasting time. By avoiding these mistakes, you can create a more appealing custom eLearning course that fulfills employee learning needs.
